Well, that's an interesting report, although I have some issues with it.
Our story on it is here:

http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/nl/44B2CE2BF35753B6CC256DF7000F9295,

and the original report is here:

http://www.tns-global.com/corporate/Rooms/DisplayPages/LayoutInitial?Container=com.webridge.entity.Entity%5BOID%5B29ABFABD4A40484EBB066139F1455792%5D%5D
although you should beware the PowerPoint presentation that it's saved as
(why? why?)...

The TNS report is focused on users' access to government services online
while the BBC news item refers instead to broadband access. The TNS report
says they asked 1000 NZers about their online activities and got a high
(75%) usage level. It also said they weighted the survey so as to get a
good cross section of the population however didn't get enough Pacific
Islanders to return a valid result. That says to me they haven't analysed
the NZ population properly or spent much time/effort in this area. If
that's the case in New Zealand, I wonder about the validity of the rest of
the survey.

The BBC report only refers to a few people asked on the street which also
casts doubt on its statistical foundation.

Where the BBC report is so interesting, I think, is in the speeds and the
price refered to. I don't know how extensive the Japanese network is, nor
how their dial-up numbers compare either with NZ's dial-up or the Japanese
broadband numbers, but I would be interested to know. Anyone have any info
on that? I'll stop now as this is moving away from even being slightly off
topic.

Cheers,

Paul

Interesting article but it does not match well with this
http://edition.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/12/09/nzealand.internet.ap/

Japan were part of that survey (which put NZ at the top of internet
usage). The article you referenced says that 80% of locations are
within 1km of a fibre optic connection which means ADSL can preform
at its best. The article also said:

> We asked a few members of the public about their perceptions of internet
use in Japan.

> The overriding impression was that net access is no longer the domain of
geeks it was five years ago.

> Rather, it is seen as a utility like gas or water that is "simply there".

And even with this they have fewer than 68% connected to the internet
within the last month.

Chrissy.
