OK I grabbed a config file from http://ozcableguy.com/alcatel.html#510
(Bridge10BTDH.ini) and modified the VPI and VCI settings as follows:

-------updated entry-------
[ phone.ini ]
add name=Br1 addr=0*100 type=ethoa
---------------------------

I then uploaded this config file to the router and acceptedthe changes
when it gave me a warning.

After this I was able to connect to the ISP using the PPPoE client built
in to Windows XP. I was also able to configure a Netgear RT311 Internet
Access gateway router using PPPoE successfully.

I wasn't able to get the Sonicwall PRO 100 to work though. I tried
versions 6.4.2.0, 6.3.0.0 and 6.5.0.3 resetting the device to factory
settings and configurnig it for PPPoE each time. After configuring the
username and password, updating the changes and hitting the connect
button I get "PPPoE Discovery Started" and "PPPoE Discovery Complete"
log messages in the event log (indicating it can find a PPP server) but
nothing after that and the Sonicwall does not initialize the PPPoE
connection at all.

At this stage I am going to give up trial and error and see if Sonicwall
can assist.
