Please note this has been CC'ed to adsl-chat. This is not technical in
nature and follow ups should really be posted to the chat list. If you want
to get yourself on the chat list, head along to

I agree, that this is the best thing that Telecom have done for a long
while. And yes, it's a good plan. However, there are a few implications.

In summary:

Short term implication...
For the consumer, is good.
For the ISPs, is bad.

Long term implication...
For the consumer, is bad
For the ISPs, is bad.

Now, to explain all of this. Starting from the 8th of March, the consumer
gets a fairly decent flat rate DSL plan. I also commend Telecom on their 10
gig cap, followed by speed limiting rather than a big bill. I'm sure Average
Joe would much prefer this. However, there are negative parts to all of
this.

1) The recommendations that the Commerce Commission have put together in the
past couple of months have been met by Telecom. Note, they have been met,
not exceeded in anyway. Now its taken a couple of years of build up for the
Commerce Commission to get this far, so its quite likely we'll have to wait
a couple more years to see more recommendations from the CC. Now is your
256/128 plan going to be that suitable in 2 years time?

2) Now, with respect to ISPs, this seems to be taking a large object and
placing it where the sun doesn't shine. And no, I'm not talking about server
rooms here. ISPs have spent a lot of time and money in building up their
Jetstart customers base, buying IPNet pipes to deliver it, and writing
billing software to manage it. Now they will find a decent chunk (and I'm
talking approximately 50 - 75%) of their Jetstart customer base moving to a
Telecom FIPD product.

So yeah, that's my opinion, which I hope is a realistic opinion. All of this
has been posted before I have read the Jetstop partnering manual that was
released this afternoon. This 31 page piece of literature appears to be my
bedtime reading for tonight.

OK. Flame away.

Dave

Blah, blah. This is my $0.02 and not my employers.

Subject: telecom broadband plan changes?

if the press release at:

http://www.telecom-media.co.nz/releases_detail.asp?id=3006&page=1&pagesize=1
0

is accurate, i want to congratulate Telecom on finding a good balance
between speed and pricing.

this is the first time i've seen the policy of reducing speed once the cap
is reached (the flat-rate plan), and it strikes me as the best compromise
for that kind of situation. as opposed to thousand dollar bills...

i wonder what telstraclear will propose to counter this, as i can't see
myself moving off a flat-rate plan :)

looking forward to it!
