Subscribers to this list may recall late last year the subject I raised
concerning the issue that XTRA had changed their method for their ADSL
clients to obtain usage values. This action by XTRA had meant that the
UsageCheck Utility made by local nice guy Andrew Connell became inoperable.
For the record and for those who either cannot recall the discussion or have
since joined this list - you will find the various threads to that series of
conversations at http://www.unixathome.org/adsl/archives/2003_08/0255.html
under the subject heading of *XTRA/Telecom and Andrew Connell's excellent
UsageCheck v 1.91*.
We learnt at the time that Andrew had left NZL and could not, because of
this, revise his utility to accommodate the way to gain access to individual
user usage reading at XTRA. Well the good news is that Andrew has now
returned back to NZL and is more than prepared to pick up from v1.91 and
develop the UsageCheck utility so that it became operable with XTRA's
pathway requirements so that it would be possible to obtain regular (daily)
automated usage information, by daily average, highs and lows in graphic
form.
As you will appreciate there is some significant enhancements that would be
required within the new version of *UsageCheck*. Andrew has advised me that
he would like to gauge the level of interest before undertaking this
revision and whether the re-work required to facilitate a new version of
UsageCheck is worthwhile.
So.... I am, on behalf of Andrew canvassing interest. Andrew has rejoined
this list so he will also be able now to gain the level of interest.
I firmly believe that the earlier utility provided by Andrew was a fantastic
time saver and also saved embarrassment when nearing XTRA's usage cap
towards the end of each billing month.
Those that had used Andrew's utility (up to v1.91) will appreciate the value
that utility provided - there really has never a piece of software -
anywhere - that matched the features that UsageCheck provided. I suggest
those who are interested in this topic go to
http://www.bpftp.com/usagecheck/ to establish the value that utility
provided ADSL users. The website is owned by Andrew so the editorial fully
identifies the values of UsageCheck - realising of course that the editorial
is meant for v1.91 and not for the intended new version.
How about informing Andrew, via this list, of your interest.
Regards to all
Kimbo
