Hi again list,
Thanks to everyone who answered my questions about quiet Panasonic
phones. I've included a summary of the issue below, based on your
responses. Please let me know if I have left anything out, or if you
have any details to add.
Once I have any feedback, I'll fire off an email to Panasonic NZ,
outlining the problem and asking them:
1. To confirm there is a problem;
2. What (if anything) can be done about it; and
3. What models are affected.
If there's nothing that can be done about it, that's fair enough, but
I would like to know what models to steer clear of, just in case my
wife (who sees this as an opportunity to buy a new phone) wants to buy
a Panasonic.
If they don't give a satisfactory answer, I suggest we start bugging
their sales guys, telling them that it's now pretty widely known that
many Panasonic phones don't work with ADSL, and since we don't know
which ones, we're advising everybody not to buy Panasonic at all.
Anyway, here's my summary of the issue:
Some "older" Panasonic cordless phones stop working correctly when
Telecom's ADSL service is installed. While the ADSL modem is in use,
these phones are very quiet. The person using the phone cannot hear
(but can be heard by) the person on the other end of the line. When
the ADSL modem is disconnnected or switched off, the phone immediately
works as normal.
Models affected include the KX-TC1005ALB (me) and KX-TC1005ALW (Seton
Wingfield).
This effect has been observed on a range of modems, including DSE
XH1149 (me), Nokia M11 and Dynalink RTA220 (Rossen Mitev). It has
been observed with several different brands of filter, including DSE
(me), Nokia and Dynalink (Rossen Mitev). It has been observed using
different brands of filter on the same line (Rossen Mitev again, Sam
Fickling). Some people have reported that the problem is reduced
(Craig Whitmore) or solved (Rossen Mitev) by having Telecom install a
central splitter.
The problem has been widely reported in Australia. For example:
1. This article speculates about possible causes:
http://www.melbpc.org.au/pcupdate/2202/2202article9.htm
2. This thread suggests possible solutions:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=135098
3. This Australian ADSL company explicitly doesn't guarentee
compatability with Panasonic cordless phones:
http://www.bluewiretech.com.au/Internet/ADSL_Broadband/adsl_broadband.html
4. This FAQ suggests using better filters (or two filters in series!)
as a solution.

Anyway, that's the issue as I understand it. Thanks again to everyone who
replied.
Gordon
