I picked up a great Dynalink RTA020 ADSL Router from trade me , I know it is
quite old but for $80 I thought it was a good price , Before that I had used
internal pci and then usb , all of them I had problems with espically when
trying to use the latest kernel version of linux , but with the Ethernet
router all is so much better , I even managed to get a 16 port netgear
router with upload link feature for $30, so plugged the adsl router into it
and now all 5 computers in our household is networked and able to access the
net , was a very very cheap solution for us.

I'm thinking of getting a cheap ADSL modem, probably from

Trademe, and need some advice.

Are there any modems/routers you would recommend I stay away

from? Bear in mind since I'm looking for cheap, most of the

modems tend to be old PCI or USB usually Dynalink, Dlink,

Puretek, Turbocomm etc... I'm not looking for perfection,

provided the modem doesn't disconnect say more then once a

day or have terrible pings would be ok. It's also only

intended for temporary use so provided it can handle at

least 256/128k, even if it doesn't squeeze the most out of

my line is fine. (When I checked my line with the old line

check tool, it was supposed to be good so hopefully that is

accurate). Linux support is useful but is not essential and

is something which I can usually find out myself...

The only problem I've identified is the Ni500. From

following discussions on this board, and checking up in the

archive, I've gathered the Ni500 has a overheating problem

and can have frequent disconnects for some people. The black

case is better then the blue but still has this problem. In

any case, this router doesn't have DMZ or any way of getting

the IP to a computer (half-bridge, PPTP whatever) so it

isn't suitable for me as I intend to keep my Windows router.
