Sorry but as I was mainly asking for advice on what modems I shouldn't buy,
not what I should buy, I didn't bother with a budget. This was a mistake
maybe but I'm hoping to spend about $30 or $40 at most (there is one buy
now for $35 + $5 shipping)

I wrote a very long explanation which I'll e-mail to you or anyone who
wants to hear (don't want to archive it and it's OT). But the short of it
is yes $40 does make a difference because this is a temporary solution
(which I mentioned) because I might be getting Wired Country in the future
(which I didn't mention earlier). The long explanation has more info if you
really want to read it but it is very long.

Anyway, although I didn't mention, and perhaps I should have, I'm still not
sure whether I'll get new or TradeMe. However most of the cheap new USB or
internal modems are the same as what's on TradeMe so I figured it'll apply
in any case.

I have been looking at routers (PriceSpy) and best as I can make out, none
of the cheap (Billion, Lectron, Puretek) ones (under $140) including the
ones you mentioned have the feature I want. I didn't really explain this
properly but I'm planning and want to keep my server/router as my
server/router. It's currently with XP Pro, I might want to run Linux or
Free/OpenBSD in the future but I haven't decided either way. Obviously an
ethernet modem/router will be much better for this but if I do get WC as I
hope, I won't have to worry about the ADSL modem. I do want the router to
be able to support some sort of IP pass through. Half-bridge (DSE et al), a
PPTP VPN solution (ala Alcatel) whatever I don't really care that much
provided it achieves the goal. For the PureTek, you mentioned something
about PPTP pass through but I believe you were referring to passing VPN
connections through to the outside world (I might be wrong of course)? DMZ
will work as will pin holing all ports but it's not optimal IMHO and I
think it might just be better to get a USB or internal modem which always
gives the IP to the computer.

However I do agree with you about some people living beyond their means. I
don't have a credit card, but when I do get one, I have no intention of
ever paying interest.

P.S. I have a home network with a 5 port 100mb auto sensing switch and also
a few spares around (long story) so a switch is unimportant in my
considerations and in any case, I don't intend to use the router as a
router so it'll be going direct to my router computer with a dedicated LAN
card (also have spares)
P.P.S. I've mentioned a few days ago some of the reasons I prefer a
computer router solution opposed to an ADSL router solution. A computer
router solution will also be able to support WC if I get it while I'll need
a new broadband router for my WC
P.P.P.S If I do decide to stay with ADSL, then I'm likely to get a better
modem/router. Not sure yet what, maybe the DSE one.
