I purchased a Speedtouch 530 from Infortek (less than $200)

Works well as a router, with 1660kb DSL line speed down. Not bad for 6km's
approx. Interestingly the Telecom (downer) install tech’s M1122 could only
get 730kb or so. 1.5 km's up the road at the A cabinet he had to by-pass, he
could get 2500kb link.

After letting it settle in on router mode, I needed to get the public IP
onto the IPCop box for IPSEC VPN, No-ip, better snort logging.

Changed it over to DHCP Spoofing mode as you recommend,
(NZ_RtPPPoA_dhcp_spoof.ini) from www.speedtouch.net.nz

Changed IPCop RED to DHCP, and it worked – ipcop has the public
222.152.253.* ip.

>From what I read there wasn’t much chance of getting it going on USB mode
with IPCop, most of the docs talk about the Speedtouch Pro, 330 or Home.

You’re right, I couldn’t get bridge mode and ipcop doing the authentication
working, even though the docs said it could be done, and the ipcop 1.4
release talks about Speedtouch PPPoE(oA). There’s no good docs on it
anywhere I could find.

Hi Dave,

With being at the limit for ADSL, you will probably want to look more
towards the router direction.

We have a SpeedTouch 530, which has 1 ethernet and 1 USB connection. But
because it has its own power supply, it will help overcome the distance
problem you may run into with a USB powered modem.
The router can be setup in Relayed PPPoA mode, which allow it to act the
same as a modem.  However, this requires PPPoA authentication through
a PPTP connection.  Please make sure that the IPCop can setup a PPPoA
connection, as most units can only handle PPPoE.  If this is a problem, the
router can be setup in DHCP Spoofing mode, which leaves the authentication
in the router, but passes the public IP address and all traffic to
the IPCop.

One of the closest rural exchanges south of Auckland City, how many years
has ADSL been available....? Could be something to do with Wired Country
building more new towers out here [Pollok Road - Clarks Beach], but none
quite reach my place, [very sad].
Anyway, I'm running IPCop router 1.3, soon to be the newly released 1.4 on a
MiniITX compact flash box. It's really good, so reliable, quiet, flexible.
I'm going to get an external USB ADSL modem for it, and wanted to buy a
really reliable, well-made, good driver one.
We're at the outer limit of ADSL distance, so one that is good on a long
reach would be nice.
Can anyone comment on the most reliable/capable brand & model of ADSL modem?
