Background: I was aware of issues with the 2mbit/192kps being ended at
the end
of this month, others have reported that they have already been reduced
to UBS
rates automatically. I personally have not had this happen but have my
own
story...
I am posting this for everyone who has contacted me regarding this
issue. I
suggest that you log all correspondence with both your ISP and Telecom.
I needed to contact orcon re a change in IP address, and this issue was
suplimental to this. But I have been told that at the end of this
month(August) all people on Split/ISP telecom charging schemes will be
"abandoned".
My Story of events today.
Orcon helpdesk (broadband/technical):13:30
Told me I had no service plan associated anymore with my account ,and
that
the IP I was currently getting was xtra ip... Not true
This I was told was a result of a credit issue that had been resolved 2
months ago and that the service had not been re-added.
Was told I needed to talk to Xtra to determine what was happening.
14:30 Steve: Jetstream technical support.
Advised, that current plan would remain, and would continue to get 192kps
speeds(not true). Told the IP I was getting was orcons ip.(already new
this as
did a whois). And that I would need to go back to orcon to figure it
out.
Orcon David: 15:06, Had no idea, Told me Craig (who responded to nzadsl
broadband list e-mail and who I initially asked for) will ring you back.
1600: E-mail correspondence with orcon (Craig )... Tole me he had re
added the
service plan and Changed back to original IP.
Am told I have to switch to xtra to maintain plan.
Xtra is more expensive and do not provide static... unsatisfactory. Why
are they stopping?
1611:Rang Jetstream again, talked to one guy initially. Transfered me to
business after telling him I wanted to negotiate. Adrian, told story...
Transfered to provisioning team, Michelle... Told story... wrong
place... she
went to check who the hell I should talk to...she thought I should be
talking
to business. Jeremy at business explained, and managed to get somewhere,
he
checked with other team as to what we could do about the static ip issue
while
maintaining the plan. Came back saying could provide the same service
via
business plan (which has static), but cost 99$ per month which is $40
additional to current charges. Adrian talked to broadband team, same
answer.
Eventually left a message for Julian(0800 10 80 10 x76632) from
Escalation
team (in auck), explaining that solutions that had been proposed were
inadequate, and that either Telecom needed to provide a Static on a
residential plan at the same speed for the equivalent price, or that I
could
go to the 99$ business plan (which is comparable/same level service) As
long
as a credit to my account is given each month.
I have had not response from Julian at present. I suggest others ring
him and
attempt to negotiate an equivalent deal to what they currently (or in
some
cases were) on, with Telecom.
Telecom is not all to blame however, in that most ISP's around the
country
signed the agreement to not split service/line charges, however for
existing
customers all options proposed by ISP's and Telecom are inadequate, and
this
whole issues has been treated by ISP's in a very surreptitious way.
Why am I doing this?
A number of reasons. Not least is Telecoms policy of not allowing
servers on
residential network, this is in many ways ridiculous, and presumes that
only
Businesses require what is for the most part "Industry Standard" IP
services,
and that the technical reality is that servers and services run on any
IP
network regardless so telecoms policy is incorrect in assuming that in
normal
operation of an IP network that there is no client services(server)
running.
Also the increased charges or reduction in service which, I am fairly
certain
voids the Consumers Gurantees act. So far I have seen no acceptable
"Resolution" provided. And I have definitely attempted to allow for a
"remedy"
under the terms of the Consumer Guarantees act.
This also draws attention to the horribly bungled Comcom 128 wholesale
issue.
64kbit does not seem like a lot but even at 192kps it is inadequate to
run
fairly basic services. I host some NPO sites and some personal sites as
well
as use my server for research as part of my Masters 192kps is horribly
inadequate, 128kps is even more so.
