To clarify:

I've spoken with a few others around the place and it appears it is
indeed "just a line" from the helpdesk (both Xtra and 123) to boost
sales/commissions. Which I'm glad to hear in a sense, as such a move
seems incredibly predatory (even for Xtra).

The amusing thing is that it's had the opposite effect for Xtra on all
the cases I've come across.

Regards,
Brendon

I believe that smtp.xtra.co.nz will accept any incoming email from an
email
client as long as it has originated from an IP address that Xtra "Owns"

Obviously it also accepts any email from mail servers no matter the ip
address (unless "blacklisted")

IE You are connected via Xtra dial up, Xtra Jetstream or have been
allocated
a fixed ip from Xtra.

Same technique is used to limit access to pop3.xtra.co.nz to collect
email.

If you connect via an Xtra ip address then you have access. Connect not
using an Xtra ip address and NO EMAIL. That is why when using the ipass
product from Xtra when travelling you need to change your pop3 address
in
the email client.

They do not look at the "from domain name in the emails!!
