Or you can use path-mtu-discovery (which is a default iirc) the kernel
keeps sending bigger and bigger packets with the 'do-not-fragment' flag
set. Eventually somewhere on the path will drop a packet 'cos it's too
big to send unfragmented, and then you know what's the optimal size packet
for that connection.

(This relies on ICMP replies to know when a packet got dropped, so it'll
break if some moron is cluelessly blocking all ICMP traffic)
