Hi all,
Around a month ago I was asking questions about Web InterNet's wireless
service. My reply is cc'ed to the ADSL mailing list because that's where
I posted the request for info. If you want to respond please consider
responding to the Broadband mailing list.
The biggest concern I had with taking on such a service is that the
availability of other user experience is virtually non-existent. Because
line of site wireless is a local service this will always be a problem.
But at least I can provide my experience in Albany, Auckland.
Installation was professional and prompt. I was given the freedom to
install the cable afterwards and provided with the length I desired
(it's 1.5cm thick!) The laptop router I decided upon using turned out to
be a nice second hand Toshiba Satellite w/16MB of RAM. It just sits
their doing the routing. No need to do anything to it at my end (it can
of course be configured remotely by Web InterNet). I was helped with the
routing commands to making sure I could connect to the Internet from my
gateway (one of my Debian GNU/Linux boxes).
I am on Web InterNet's 256kbit/s up/down flat rate plan. I haven't been
doing anything flat out for hours on end but the 256kb/s is there and in
my experience available whatever the time of day. In an upstream test of
downloading 1MB of random data from a different Auckland location the
speed was extremely good.
Over the time there has been one outage I have noticed. That was a
router upgrade. I haven't been pinging anything constantly to see if the
connection ever goes down so there may have been outages I am not aware
of. However we are dealing with simple routing to fixed IP addresses
which is probably quite robust to small connection problems.
Weather report: Thankfully I was able to check that the connection was
fine in some extreme rain we had in Auckland a few weeks back.
Biggest bonus: This has to be Web InterNet's local Debian mirror. Let's
just say officially that I'm only able to download from it at
256kbits/s.
So overall an extremely positive result. The connection is the reliable
and fast solution I was seeking.
Regards,
Adam
