Don't use VNC unencrypted over a publiuc network.

Try something like this instead.

ssh -C -L 5900:<remote-vnc-machine>:5900 -f <remove-shell-machine-on-remote-lan> sleep 9 &
vncviewer localhost -encodings "copyrect hextile"

"sleep 9" might be not enough if the connection takes a while to set up.
Also it wont work if the connection requires a password to complete.

In those cases just remove the '-f' and 'sleep 9 &' parts and use two terminals.
