As always, I think it'll be best to move this to the broadband list...
I think you're right. It depends what Tony means by trees in the way.
From my understanding, if the trees actually block the LOS to SkyTower,
you will probably not be able to get service. With wifi at 2.4g, LOS
is not so important but trees can be a problem due to water when it rains.
But with WC, LOS is very important!
I've noticed Worldnets plans before and they don't have data caps (but
it's shared international bandwidth). As such I would suggest one thing
you look into is the quality of their WC service. As you may know,
Ezysurf (ICONZ) also have unlimited plans but it's shared international
bandwidth and my understanding is that international connection quality,
especially with regards to latency is very poor on these plans. Their
data capped plans are much better though from what I've heard. All this
was garned largely from the nzwireless.org forums so do check it out.
Also, Ezysurf recently announced?/introduced? (I think, only read it
recently, it's in the FAQ)the policy that they're going to throttle
P2P apps (on all plans I believe). They do say if you have legitimates
uses of P2P apps to talk to them.
The way I see things, last time I checked (before WorldNet) Ihug arguably
have the best 1mbit package, EzySurf the best 2mbit package, unless you
want unlimited international (most/all ISPs on WC have unlimited national
data). However do also consider that EzySurf charge 5c/mb over the limit
while Ihug just throttle you to 64k (which applies to national too I
think). One thing to bear in mind, Ihug is the only provider of phone line
service currently but you can get Ihug phone+another ISP and it doesn't
cost more (well except Ihug offer a discount if you have toll calls with
them which can be credited either to the internet portion or the toll
portion I think). However, if you want the phone service, they need to
install it when you get you internet otherwise you have to pay them again
I think. I'm not sure what happens if you want a different ISP so this is
another think you might want to check out, if you are interested in the
phone service.
Yes you do have to choose ISP first. Most/all WC plans offered by ISPs
have a 6 month minimum contract (this is with the ISP) so you will want
to choose ISPs carefully. Ezysurf/ICONZ has a 6 month continuous
contract (i.e. new contract every 6 months) which is somewhat unusual
and is probably a significant consideration. Last checked a few months
ago so you might want to look into it again.
You might want to approach Orcon about Wiredcountry. I emailed them
about it a while back and they said they were considering it but were
waiting to see how much interest there was. I tried to go with another
ISP but signal was too weak (Skytower is too far) and I informed them
about this so I don't know what's happening there now...
